Waring School is a co-educational, college preparatory day school for a student population of 168, grades 6-12 in Beverly, MA. Waring’s mission is “To create and sustain a community of lifelong learners who are working together for the individual and common good.”

Title: Debate Coach

Description: Waring School seeks an experienced Speech/Debate Coach who has experience working with High School and Middle School students, both in the classroom/coaching setting and in tournament/match play. The ideal candidate is versatile, able to work with students of varied ages, and willing and eager to collaborate with colleagues from multiple disciplines in order to ensure that Speech and Debate be integrated into Waring’s program (e.g. Humanities and Science) above and beyond its place in Electives and Afternoon Activities. The ideal candidate has experience in regional/national tournaments, judging competitions, and has a network in the Speech and Debate leagues at large. The ideal candidate inspires students to rise to the various platforms and stages of Debate and is also able to corral the help of parents and volunteers to help with the efforts.

Key Responsibilities Include:

● Oversees the Speech and Debate program at Waring School

● Schedules matches/tournaments

● Recruits, coaches students during Electives and Afternoon Activities periods

● Enlists parent/guardian volunteer opportunities (including judging debates)

● Collaborates with colleagues to integrate Speech/Debate into other areas of the

curriculum

● Participates in other aspects of the Waring program (e.g. in All-School Meeting) and

attends events (performances, parent coffees, admissions open houses, etc.) as appropriate

Key Qualifications and Experience:

Schedule: Part-time within the academic year, with preparation work over the summer as appropriate. Debate meets during Monday electives (Monday afternoons) and, depending on the season or group of students, during other afternoons during the academic year. From time to time, there are opportunities for Debate to collaborate/integrate within other areas/disciplines in the school (e.g. Humanities, Science, French). Regional/National tournaments occur on the weekends as scheduled externally.

Compensation: Compensation is commensurate with experience. Compensation for this Part-Time position is approximately $15,000 (Debate coaching only), with other opportunities for fuller-time employment for candidates with the right qualifications and experience (see Waring School website for more opportunities).
